What is Pure Women’s Health?

Women’s health, and in particular pelvic health physiotherapy, is a specialised branch of physical therapy that focuses on assessing and treating conditions related to pre and post-natal health, menopause, the pelvic region, and pelvic floor muscles.

These services are not solely reserved for addressing existing concerns. Regular check-ups will maintain your physical wellbeing before a problem arises.

Let us help you on the path to your healing journey.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

The descent or displacement of pelvic organs such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum into the vaginal canal. This can cause pain, pressure, and urinary incontinence.

This can be caused by endometriosis, pelvic floor issues, PCOS, and many other conditions. Our specialist team can help work out a plan to suit your needs and goals.

What to expect

Our team of specialist female health physiotherapists will provide a safe space for you to discuss any issues you are having, take a thorough history of your condition and overall health, and how it is affecting you and your life. We then take you through a detailed examination to diagnose the cause of your problems.

Following this diagnosis, we discuss what this means and together, come up with a treatment and rehabilitation plan to start you on your journey to recovery. You will receive support at every step of your journey, be it with email support or a quick question in between your appointments.

We believe in giving you more than a diagnosis. Our treatment is not just for a body part – we look at your life as a whole and the science behind how the whole picture contributes to your overall hormone health.

Women’s health issues can be all encompassing, we understand how often in life that personal health can end up being the bottom of our priority list. You don’t need to be embarrassed with how long an issue has been going on for, or how long you’ve been meaning to get around to sorting it. We get it. This service is a judgement free safe space for you to get support in a caring environment.

Are children allowed in the treatment room?

You can of course bring babies and children with you to your appointment. However, the intimate nature of pelvic health consultations may lead you to prefer attending your appointment alone. This allows you to fully focus on your health and well-being. Of course, we recognise that scheduling childcare isn’t always possible. If you need to bring a child, please inform our admin team. We will gladly provide information about pushchair access and prepare the treatment room accordingly.

Can I bring someone with me?

If you would feel comfortable bringing someone with you to your appointment then we do allow this. However, due to the intimate nature of some examinations, your practitioner may need to request the person accompanying you to stand in a particular position in the room.

What support do you give new mums?

Being a new mum involves many challenges and juggling acts. If you need to bring your baby to your appointment, we’ve got you covered. We have mats and toys available, and you are welcome to bring someone along to help with your little one during your examination. We factor in plenty of time, so feel free to feed your baby whenever needed. And if you require any additional support to access our services, simply message our admin team. One of our specialist physiotherapists will be happy to help.

Are internal examinations required?

As with any examination, an internal examination will never be performed without your explicit consent. The pelvic floor muscle is like any other muscle in the body, and as physiotherapists, assessing it helps us diagnose your condition and plan your treatment. However, we understand that the pelvic floor is located internally, and an internal examination is not something everyone feels comfortable with. Our specialised women’s health physiotherapists are trained to discuss the pros and cons of an internal examination with you. Remember, you are in control of your body and have the right to decline. You can also let us know beforehand if you prefer not to discuss this option during your appointment.

What does an internal examination involve?

The internal examination, will depend on the person and their condition and therefore we can’t specifically say what it will entail. If you would like to know more information on internal examinations, please call our admin team on 0800 989 0031 and one of our Women’s Health Physios will be in touch with you to discuss further and answer any questions you may have.

The internal examination will only ever be performed with your consent and it is not a requirement, you may choose not to have one and that is absolutely fine.

What does it cost?

Initial assessment and treatment = 60 mins is £75
Follow up treatment = 60 mins is £70
Follow up treatment = 30 mins is £45

Can I choose a female physiotherapist?

Currently, all Pure Physiotherapy Women’s Health Physiotherapists are female.

Do you offer Mummy MOT?

Our physiotherapists offer a comprehensive postnatal check, including a conversation about your birth experience, an opportunity to ask questions, an assessment of your abdomen for diastasis recti (the tummy gap), a review of your C-section scar (if applicable), discussion of postnatal recovery and return to exercise, advice on any birth injuries you may have, and, with your consent, an external or internal examination of your pelvic floor muscles. This thorough assessment allows us to tailor a personalised plan for your optimal recovery.

Can I have an examination while I’m on my period?

In short, yes. However, for your comfort you may prefer to avoid having examination when you are on a heavier flow day. Feel free to email our admin team to discuss this with your Physiotherapist beforehand.

How can I prepare for my first appointment?

While there’s no specific preparation required for your appointment, it may be helpful to:

  • Reflect on the timeline of your problem (when it started, how it’s progressed).
  • Write down any questions you have for your physiotherapist.
  • Complete any forms sent by our admin team beforehand.

For your comfort, you may wish to ensure that you are feeling fresh. An opportunity for restroom use will be provided before your examination, so please don’t worry about that.

Our Women’s Health Physiotherapists are well-experienced in handling these types of concerns, so you can relax and be assured of a helpful and confidential session.
